A safe and merry Christmas

Christmas is generally a time for the family, but for some in Welshpool this year will not only the first that they celebrate, but one that will be spent in safety.

The Welshpool area has become a safe haven for several families from Afghanistan, who fled here to escape the grip of the Taliban in their home country.

They have been welcomed into our community by a number of organisations, and on Saturday they were taken for a special Christmas outing to Coed y Dinas by the local Rotary Club.

“The children visited Santa’s grotto and each received a present, courtesy of Charlie’s,” said a club spokesperson. “After visiting Santa everyone enjoyed the pop-up cafe for a drink and a cake.”

Several Rotarians were on hand to help ensure their visit was a success, and to achieve its aim of giving the adults and children an idea of how we celebrate a traditional Christmas.

The minimal expenses incurred were borne by the club.
