Powys slacking on fuel price drops

12/06/2023 @ 10:41

Powys has been revealed as one the slowest areas in Wales to recover from the astronomical fuel price rises that we all suffered last year.

Following a 20.17% surge in 2022, the average price of fuel stood at a staggering 182.51 pence per litre (PPL). Prices almost reached £2 in the Welshpool area.

This has since decreased by a significant 12.30% to 160.16PPL as of May 2023, according to Moneyzine (https://moneyzine.com/).

The Welshpool area is now seeing prices move towards the 140PPL mark.

It places Powys third from bottom on the list of Welsh counties, with Gwynedd leading the downward slide in prices with 13.43% compared to last year.

Bottom of the pile is Monmouthshire who are only seeing a 11.17% decrease in their pump prices.

How did Moneyzine compile their figures?

  1. For every county analysed, fleetnews.co.uk was scraped for fuel prices in all months across DieselUnleaded and Super Unleaded pence per litre, from May 2023-Dec 2021 (Data for Feb 2022 was unavailable and therefore not included in the dataset).
  2. The average of Dec 2021, Jan 2022, March 2022 was compared to the average of Dec 2022-July 2022 to find out how much the percentile increase was for Diesel, Unleaded and Super Unleaded across all counties. These were then averaged to find out overall which region had the highest increase in fuel prices over 2022.
  3. Additionally, the five-month average over May-Jan 2023 was calculated and compared to Dec 2022-July 2022 to find out which region recovered best from the fuel increase.

Data was collected on 11/05/2023 and is accurate as of then.
