Firework displays cancelled as storm moves in

Guilsfield could now be in for a bumper fireworks night on Sunday after the big local displays on Friday and Saturday were cancelled.

COBRA Rugby Club made the early decision to cancel Friday’s display in Meifod due to the expected impact from Storm Ciarán which will reach the Welshpool area later today.

“Due to the weather forecast Friday, we have had to cancel. Sorry for any inconvenience caused,” the club announced.

Just hours later, Welshpool Town Council made a similar announcement about its big free event on Saturday night at Maesydre which is watched by thousands of people across the town.

“There are serious health and safety concerns over more than a thousand people going onto very sodden ground, with Maesydre already being under water, and those people treading on the football ground where the Town Council have just had around £20k of end of season works carried out,” said Town Clerk, Anne Wilson.

“We looked at various dates and have agreed we will go back to them after Remembrance with some possible dates, noting that the weather forecast for the next week or so is rain.”

But Welshpool and Meifod’s pain could well be Guilsfield’s gain with their event still set to go ahead on Sunday evening.

The gates to the Jubilee Hut will open at 6pm with the bonfire to be lit at 6.30pm and fireworks set for 7pm. Adults are £3 and children just a pound, with those attending asked to bring the correct change if possible. Food and refreshments will be available.

Storm Ciarán

While South Wales is expected to take the full brunt of the storm, the Welshpool area is again being warned to be prepared.

You can do the following:

  • Register for Natural Recourses Wales free flood warning service at www.naturalresources.wales/flooding or by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188.
  • Check the flood warning pages on NRW’s website for local Flood Alerts and Flood Warnings. These pages are updated every 15 minutes.
  • Think about how you can prepare your home and business now. Move valuables and vehicles to a higher location and think about packing a flood kit. NRW’s website has a range of information on how people can prepare for flooding.
