Welshpool area back on flood alert

27/12/2023 @ 08:45

We’re in for another day of only travelling if essential after Natural Resources Wales warned that the Welshpool area is on a flood alert.

Days of wet weather have taken their toll with several of the normal trouble spots like the Airport Road closing at times due to rising water levels, and Storm Gerrit’s 70mph arrival overnight has added to the problems.

“Heavy rainfall from #StormGerrit affected the whole of Wales overnight and in to today (Wednesday),” a spokesperson for Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said, adding that the flood warnings remain in place until 6pm.

“We’re urging people to be prepared, as this may cause localised flooding impacts and there are 10 Flood Alerts in place (for all of Wales).”

The River Vyrnwy is expected to cause us the biggest problems locally with “flooding of low-lying land and roads expected”.

“Roads close to Meifod Bridge, the B4393 near Llansantffraid Bridge and the B4398 at New Bridge Llanymynech could also be affected by the rising levels,” the warning states this morning.

The Severn Valley west of Newtown is also expected to be particularly hard hit, along with the western section of the Dyfi catchment, but we can also expect problems from those rivers as the levels rise through the day downriver towards us.

NRW is updating its web site every 15 minutes and anyone travelling is advised to check before setting off.

“Our officers are monitoring river levels and the forecast weather closely and will issue Flood Warnings if there is a risk to people and their homes,” they said.
