Welcome to Welsh-pool

04/01/2024 @ 10:08

With the River Severn peaking at nearly seven metres in parts over the past 24 hours, residents, and motorists in particular, will be hoping that some sort of normality will return for the first time in 2024.

The Storm Henk drenching brought flooding to levels that almost cut Welshpool off with the town headlining the traffic news on BBC Radio Wales for more than 24 hours.

But community spirit has come to the fore once again with local Facebook groups providing constant updates on driving and road conditions over the past 72 hours.

An incident was reported last night in the Wern area when emergency services assisted, but apart from a busy few days ahead for the area’s mechanics, we appear to have come through relatively unscathed.

Photographer Phil Blagg has captured the scene this morning perfectly, and we are posting a folder of images onto our Facebook page this morning.

There are still roads closed this morning – with the Welshpool-Arddleen route still a problem – so please take care. The road past Sidoli's to Leighton is also closed, along with the Airport Road. The roads to Shrewsbury, Llanfair Caereinion, Newtown and Guilsfield appear to be clear.

A cold front is sweeping towards us and bringing dryer weather for the coming days.
