Events town Welshpool hungry for more

Welshpool Town Council is keen to work closely with event organisers, but is warning that support won’t extend to financial help.

The town is earning a stellar reputation as an events hub with concerts, sporting events, street markets and more all being successfully hosted and well supported in Welshpool since we awoke from our Covid-enforced slumber. The carnival has also made a welcome return.

But with a challenging financial year ahead for the Town Council, planners are warning event organisers that while they will be welcomed with open arms, there simply aren’t the funds available for cash support.

The message was delivered when the Town Council Events and Tourism Committee considered what support could be provided to the 2024 1940s Weekend in September and the Get Jerky North Wales Rally on March 16.

Cllr Billy Spencer described the 1940s Weekend as “absolutely phenomenal” and said organiser Alan Crowe was “an amazing fella who deserves the Town Council’s support”, while Committee Chair, Cllr Carol Robinson, said the 2023 edition of the rally, which started and finished in the town centre, was “a brilliant day that brought a lot of people to the town”.

They also highlighted March’s Welshpool 10K as another key event approaching.

But times are hard for the Town Council which is set to reveal its Council Tax precept soon, bringing a word of caution from the chamber about their levels of involvement.

Councillors agreed to work closely with the organisers to ensure their success and will provide whatever support is possible, including manpower, but nothing financial.

The council was particularly keen to work closer with the 1940s Weekend this year and will meet Mr Crowe and his team in the near future to discuss.
