Shock as Welshpool care home set to close

A Welshpool residential home for elderly people is set to close after 35 years due to rising costs.

The Trustees of Dorothy Hughes House said that they “are sad to announce that the House will no longer be able to accept residents from this forthcoming April”.

For nearly four decades, the House has offered secure and sociable accommodation for elderly persons who prefer to live in a comfortable and communal home rather than to continue living on their own.

The Trustees said in a statement that they have “tried to provide this accommodation at an affordable cost but sadly, rising prices and costs have made this increasingly uneconomic and mindful of their duty to safeguard the trust, the Trustees have reluctantly decided to close the home”.

Chairman of the Trustees, Ruth Canning, said: “My late father was one of the founding trustees of the home, which was opened firstly as an Abbeyfield home, but has for many years now been run under our own management.

“I am so pleased that we have been able to offer a loving home to so many residents over this time. I wish to thank my fellow Trustees and all our staff past and present for their wonderful service.”

Current residents will be moved to new homes over the next two months with the statement adding: “But we must now move on and decide a new direction to meet the objective of the trust which is to provide a benefit to the local community.”

What is Dorothy Hughes House?

The house was built in 1878 in a commanding position in Welshpool, overlooking the town and with wonderful views across to the Long Mountain.

The property was purchased as a result of a legacy donated by the late Dorothy Hughes and the house received its first residents in 1993.
