Urdd Eisteddfod faces accommodation challenge

02/02/2024 @ 10:04

The Welshpool area is set to be swamped by tens of thousands of visitors this May when one of Europe’s biggest youth festivals is to be held close to the town.

It is the first time that the six-day festival has been held in Montgomeryshire since 1988 and organisers are hoping for the area to come together to provide a warm welcome, with businesses being urged to take advantage.

Powys County Council issued a call last night for the hospitality industry to get involved, and is providing information about accommodation that will be available in north Powys.

Cllr David Selby, Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said: “The Maldwyn 2024 Urdd Eisteddfod will provide plenty of opportunities for local businesses as thousands of visitors are expected to visit this year’s event.

“I would urge accommodation businesses to include themselves on the accommodation list and local businesses to attend the Business Breakfast that is taking place in Welshpool in February.”

The event will be taking place at Mathrafal Farm, near Meifod, between May 27 and June 1, but the Business Breakfast will be held on Friday, February 9, at the Royal Oak in Welshpool so local businesses can hear about the opportunities at this year’s festival. To register your interest email Nannonevans@urdd.org.

If you have an accommodation business in north or mid Powys and would like to be included on the Urdd Eisteddfod accommodation list, email tourism@powys.gov.uk with your contact information, location and accommodation type.
