UPDATED: High schools close over snow fears

07/02/2024 @ 07:04

High school pupils are set to enjoy an unexpected snow day after the cancellation of school transport forced the early decision to close our three local high schools tonight.

Powys County Council announced earlier this evening that all school transport would be cancelled over fears that snow could Montgomeryshire from 4am.

And with around 70% of Welshpool High School pupils using transport, headteacher Jon Arnold decided to make an early closure call “to ensure the safety of all students, families and staff members”.

He told us that learning would switch to Google Classroom.

MyWelshpool also understands that Llanfyllin High School will close tomorrow due to the transport issue, as will Llanfair Caereinion.

An Amber Warning for snow and ice is in place from 8am-5pm tomorrow for large parts of North Powys, but there is a chance that it may not impact Welshpool which is right on the warning’s edge.

The weather is expected to improve through Thursday so the schools say it should be business as usual on Friday.
