COLUMN: Introducing Labour’s local candidate
In his first column for us, Labour’s Steve Witherden lays out his plans.
I work as a secondary school teacher and as an elected National Executive Member of my trade union. I live in the north of the constituency with my wife, an NHS Cancer Services worker, and with my son and daughter, who both attend schools in our constituency.
I have deep ties to Montgomeryshire. My father having been a founding member of the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth in the 1970s and my family have lived in the area ever since. It should come as no surprise, then, that preserving the beauty of the Welsh countryside, ensuring the sustainability of rural towns and communities, and protecting the viability of both for future generations is of utmost importance to me.
I am regularly seen in both Welshpool and Newtown, whether speaking with Town Councillors or attending hustings or agricultural events in the Bull & Heifer, the Corn Exchange and the Livestock Market. I am an approachable candidate on our streets and fully involved with the community.
For decades our constituency has been a choice between the Lib Dems and the Tories, but the addition of Glyndŵr now makes us a Labour-Tory two-horse race. Indeed, the most recent Electoral Calculus polling predicts a 60% chance of a Labour win here, and a 0% chance for the Lib Dems. I have been deeply touched and honoured by many Lib Dem supporters reaching out to state that they are kindly lending their votes to me.

Ers degawdau mae ein hetholaeth wedi bod yn un ymylol rhwng y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol a'r Torïaid, ond mae ehangu'r etholaeth, i gynnwys Glyndŵr, yn ein gwneud yn ymylol rhwng Llafur a'r Torïaid.
Yn wir, mae’r arolwg barn mwyaf diweddar o wefan Electoral Calculus yn rhagweld siawns o 60% o fuddugoliaeth i Lafur yma a 0% i'r Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol. Rwy'n gwerthfawrogi'n fawr fod llawer o gefnogwyr y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol wedi estyn allan i ddatgan eu bod am roi benthyg eu pleidleisiau i mi.
Mae gennyf ddiddordeb mawr mewn clywed gan bobl yn y Drenewydd, y Trallwng, a'r pentrefi cyfagos ar y materion sydd o bwys iddynt.
