Former HSBC ‘drugs farm’ to go under the hammer

Welshpool’s former HSBC Bank is set to go under the hammer, with an opening bid of £110,000 expected.

The bank called time on its Welshpool operations in September 2021, and since then the Grade II-listed building on The Cross has sat empty, apart from the shock of a large drugs farm being discovered there in January.

Specialists, Auction House North West, have listed the property for their March 13 online auction, with a note that consent was given by Powys County Council in 2023 to convert the upstairs into four apartments, with the ground floor to remain as commercial.

The three-storey former bank is believed to have been constructed in 1876.

Police raids across the town in January uncovered three major drugs farms at the HSBC building, the former County Times offices and an empty property near the ongoing Buttington roundabout developments. Only one arrest was made in connection with the raids to date.
