As rail chaos returns, Welshpool users asked ‘what do you want to see at station’?

Rail users heading east of Shrewsbury will face around two weeks of disruption after a major landslip closed the line near Wellington.

Around 5,000 tonnes are believed to have fallen away, leaving the line unsafe, but the replacement bus service from Shrewsbury was thrown into chaos when one of the first coaches running hit a low bridge near Albrighton. Services will run as normal from Welshpool though.

While engineers work on repairing the problem by a stated March 28, the Welshpool Rail Users group is asking passengers for their views on how the town’s station can be improved.

The group’s Ken Law said: “Last year we saw an additional shelter installed which had been asked for since before 2016.

“I raised with Transport for Wales that we had no call point on the station platform, only a very old one at the entrance to the car park which was considered to be redundant.

“Transport for Wales have confirmed that they will put in call points on all station platforms along the Cambrian Line that currently don’t have them but haven’t yet committed to a timescale.

“The issue of ownership, roles and responsibilities for the footbridge are almost resolved and I’m asking for a memorandum of understanding so that there is complete clarity going forward.

“So, the question is what priorities and improvements would you like to see for Welshpool Station in the next year and going forward?”

Users can participate on the Welshpool Rail Users Facebook page with Mr Law saying he will collate suggestions for rail bosses.
