Work begins on £312m Shrewsbury Hospital project

Work is underway on a new £312million project to transform the hospital that a majority of us use for health problems.

The Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has confirmed that work has started on the Hospital Transformation Plan (HTP) at Shrewsbury hospital, and it has been welcomed by Montgomeryshire MP, Craig Williams.

The Trust’s Outline Business Case for its HTP was approved by the UK Government in December 2023, and Mr Williams reported this morning that work has begun within the Hospital’s Clinical Decisions Unit, as well as the construction of a new unit to house a new gamma camera, plans for a modular ward extension, and a state-of-the-art LINAC bunker.

Over the coming weeks, there will be multiple large deliveries of construction materials to the site, which will require the main road to be widened and realigned to maintain ambulance and construction access.

At the same time SaTH will continue to develop its Full Business Case, which is the final stage of Government approval.

“After now being over a decade in the making, it is fantastic to see that real progress is being made by SaTH in delivering its Hospital Transformation Plan at Shrewsbury Hospital - and that the diggers are finally in the ground on site,” said Mr Williams.

“This programme has been enabled by over £300m of UK Government investment and is absolutely vital for improving health and care services for communities across Mid Wales, Shropshire and Telford. The plans will also serve to vastly reduce current A&E waiting times at both Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals, as well as ambulance turnaround periods.

“Alongside my Parliamentary colleagues within Shropshire, I will continue to work closely with the Trust as they develop their Full Business Case, as well as Department of Health & Social Care officials to ensure the HTP can be delivered at pace.”

SaTH’s plans for the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as part of its HTP include:

  • A new emergency department, including an Urgent Treatment Centre and Critical Care Unit
  • Emergency Medicine including cardiology, stroke, respiratory and acute medicine facilities
  • Consultant-led maternity care
  • New children’s centre including inpatient and surgery facilities
  • Gynaecological Services
  • Consultant Neonatal Services
