New MP for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, Steve Witherden, is still on the lookout for a new office, but the sheer size and terrible roads of his new constituency is posing challenges.
Mr Witherden, who was at Guilsfield Show yesterday (pictured), swept into office to become the area’s first Labour MP in July’s General Election, and is finding his feet after a tough introduction to Parliament following the tragic death of his mother.
But the summer recess is allowing him the opportunity to set himself up for the duration with a full-time office, or offices.
Welshpool was the base for Conservative MPs Glyn Davies and Craig Williams, and Mr Witherden said the town could well be playing a major role in local politics once again.
“We are still viewing properties around the constituency and did this in Welshpool on Friday,” he told us.
“No definitive decisions have been made yet but we are also exploring Clause D.6.3 on this topic: which stipulates that in a large constituency, with transport link issues (you drive through Shropshire to get from Montgomeryshire to Glyndŵr), there are circumstances where an MP can sometimes be eligible to have two offices.
“And one in the south and one in the north could be viable. Either way, due to the size of our constituency, we are committed to holding surgeries absolutely everywhere and have already reached out to Community Councils in relation to this.”
