The campaign team leading the fight to save Welshpool’s Air Ambulance base have refused to accept defeat and believe the fight is not over.
Whilst it appeared yesterday’s Judicial Review that supported the decision to close the base was the final knock-out blow, campaigners believe they can rise from the canvas to mount one last 12-round counter-attack.
The 71-page ruling from The Honourable Mr Justice Turner, who presided over the Review, makes disappointing reading, but ultimate found that the decision to close Welshpool and Caernarfon bases in favour of a new one in North East Wales was legally sound.
That decision was blasted by local politicians last night, with MP Steve Witherden saying he was “deeply disappointed” and added he would “continue to do everything in my power to support them (campaign team)”.
And MS, Russell George, has also said the fight is not over yet and followed up yesterday’s campaign group statement by adding: “I want to pay tribute to the many individuals who fought tirelessly to challenge the closure of the mid Wales base, whether through petitions, fundraising, or public campaigning. This has been an extraordinary campaign and demonstrates the strength of feeling across our communities.
“I was surprised that many of the arguments and challenges that were presented at the hearing earlier this year, seem to have not been addressed in the judicial review judgement. This is a setback, but it does not mark the end of the matter. As a campaign group, we will now be meeting to discuss the next steps and a potential challenge to the decision.”
Wales Air Ambulance Charity said the plans will help to “improve the service” they can provide, and we will carry their full statement later today.
