Parents warned over holidays in term time

Parents and carers have been told to stop taking their children on holidays during term time in a bid to boost attendance.

In a letter to high school parents this week, Dr Richard Jones, Director of Education at Powys County Council, has told parents that there are 175 days of the year when children are not in school and this is when holidays should be taken.

Poor attendance in schools since Covid has been flagged up by inspectors as an issue in the county’s schools and the letter points out that any child whose attendance rate is under 95% “may need to catch up”.

The parents and carers of those who drop below 90% are “at risk of prosecution”.

“We therefore request that you arrange your holidays around the existing 175 days that schools are closed during weekends and school holidays and help us and the school support your child in achieving success in school,” Dr Jones said.

Many parents take holidays in term time to avoid the high prices charged during the school holidays.
