Welshpool tree cull has been ‘months in the planning’

Dozens of fully-grown Welshpool trees have been “butchered” by contractors over concerns about their threat to nearby properties.

Residents have been in touch to complain about the mass tree-felling operation at the ‘Dingle’ just off Borfa Green, with a large number of trees chopped down over the past week.

Many have questioned why the work has been carried out now at the height of summer whilst wildlife are in their breeding seasons, but the county council explained that it is an operation that has taken months of planning.

“Did it really need to happen now?” one reader asked us. “They have gone in and butchered a whole area of trees and taken the wildlife living there with them.”

But a spokesperson for Powys County Council explained: “The work taking place known as Bull Dingle in Welshpool has been carefully planned and programmed over several months, with all local residents being kept fully informed throughout the process.

“The council’s housing service have secured all the necessary licenses, and the works are being executed with the utmost efficiency to minimize disruption. The tree removals were deemed necessary due to significant concerns regarding the health and size of the trees in question being located close to properties.”
