Tip booking system “is working well”

Powys County Council is pleased with the way its controversial recycling centre system is working well and claims photographs in a MyWelshpool article are on private land and pre-date its introduction in April.

Last week we shared a claim by Welshpool’s self-titled ‘clean-up minion’, Kelly Meredith, that she had seen a rise in fly tipping in the town and backed her claim with photographs of a number of sites.

But Powys County Council has responded by saying it is happy with the system and will carry out a review after six months.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “Unfortunately, despite all efforts, fly-tipping always happens, especially in certain problem areas.

“The majority of the incidents photographed in Welshpool recently have already been reported to the council and are under investigation. Many of the incidents are on private land and pre-date the changes made to the Household Recycling Centres back in April.

“The booking system at the recycling centre has been working well since being introduced, with those that have used it responding positively to the changes. A full review of the new arrangements will be conducted after the first six months. The review will consider feedback from site users, local councillors, contractors and staff, as well as analysing the data such as recycling rates and any changes to fly-tipping.”

However, it is hoped that views from those who have stopped using the sites, including a large number of MyWelshpoolreaders, can also be taken on board.

Welshpool Town Council is also looking to meet with Powys council officials to share their concerns and determination to have the system reversed.
