New scam alert for the Welshpool area
The criminals are currently targeting vulnerable residents on the phone by claiming to be officers from Holborn Police station having arrested someone in possession of their bank card.
“We would also ask that members of the public share this advice with any friends or family that may not have access to social media,” they said in a joint statement.
To support the force, MyWelshpool is sharing the following advice provided by Dyfed-Powys Police.
An important reminder:
- Telephone numbers and text messages can easily be spoofed. You should never trust the
- number you see on your telephones display.
- Police will never ask for debit or credit card details.
- Police will not contact you to say your cards have been cloned.
- Police, or your bank, will never ask you to withdraw money or transfer it to a different account.
- They will also never ask you to reveal your full banking password or PIN.
What should people do if they are called?
Do:
- Make a note of the callers’ details, including name, rank, collar number and station.
- Note any contact details from caller display, or via 1471 after the call has ended.
- End the call. Say you will contact the police directly to confirm the caller’s identity and be put through internally. Police contact details are below. Use a different device from the one you received the suspicious call on.
- If you don’t have a different device, ring a family member or friend (make sure the call connects) before you call police or your bank. This is to make sure the line has disconnected from the initial (suspected fraud) caller.
Don’t:
- Hand out any personal or financial details.
- Engage in conversation. Hang up.
- Make any arrangements to hand over any cash or card.
