Lights, stand, action!

Waterloo Rovers Football Club have confirmed ambitious plans to move up in the footballing world, with them hoping to overcome the first hurdle this week.

The club has been plying its trade in the Montgomeryshire and Mid Wales leagues for four decades, and currently has a first team playing in the MMP Central Wales League North and a reserve set-up in the Montgomeryshire League.

But at tomorrow night’s Welshpool Town Council Operations & Development Committee meeting (Wednesday), they will look for the local authority’s permission to build a new 100-seater stand and install floodlights.

The two things are requirements if the club wants to advance up to Tier 3 of Welsh football which would see them play in the Lock Stock Ardal North East League.

“To enable us to apply we require initial planning consent from the Town Council and if all goes well we will provide correct lighting details for Powys County Council permission,” said the club’s stalwart, Dave Proctor, who added that this is the first step before they can apply for grants to support the project.

Waterloo Rovers currently sit in fifth place in the table, but with games in hand on the clubs above them, they have a serious chance of securing one of the two promotion places.
