“This is like deja vu!”

Coming up with a new name for Welshpool’s Tourist Information Centre has turned into quite a conundrum for the Town Council, but have they finally cracked it?

The building underwent a controversial £300,000 transformation two years ago, creating plush new public toilets and now housing the Town Council administration.

But what seemed like a simple exercise has turned into a drawn-out process with councillors trying, but failing, to crack it last month!

Last summer, as part of the town survey, there was a split in public opinion, with 111 votes for calling it the Tourist Information Centre and exactly the same number – 111 – wanting Welshpool Information Centre.

But with the Town Council now based there, last month, its Operations & Development Committee decided to name it the Welshpool Town Council Offices & Information Centre, but that was later thrown out as being too much of a mouthful by the full council.

So, we were back at square one this week, having the same discussion, with Town Clerk Richard Williams saying: “This is like déjà vu!”

And Cllr Nick Howells was bemused  by it all, adding: “I don’t know why we are spending so much time on this. It is ridiculous!”

But Cllr Chris Davies pointed out that this was one of the last few facilities of its kind in small towns across Wales and said it was important to get it right with the Tour de France coming next year and the canal set to reopen in the coming years.

“If it’s not broken, the don’t fix it,” he said. “It has been known as the Tourist Information Centre for a long, long, time.”

He was then told that it was actually officially renamed the Visitor Information Centre several years ago!

Anyway, it appears they may have finally nailed it!

Cllr Sally Fitzgerald’s proposal to call it the Welshpool Information Centre, with the Town Council logo to appear in any signage, was firmly backed by councillors.

It will now reappear before the full council for approval at the end of the month, before signage can then be installed to finish the long-winded job off.
