Adele Nicoll’s Olympic dream has come to an end, but what a week of thrills and spills she has given us at the Milano Cortina Games.
Adele completed her childhood ambition of becoming an Olympian, firstly by competing in the Monobob last week, and then, tonight, completing her competition in the 2-woman bobsleigh with Ashleigh Nelson.
She performed magnificently today, saving her best until last by turning in a stunning third heat to secure her place in the fourth and final heat.
That had been very much in doubt though overnight when she was kicking herself for errors in the opening two heats that left her sitting in 21st, one spot outside the qualifying top 20 for the final heat.
The commentator said she delivered “the ride of her life!” as she finished heat three with the 11th fastest time to move up to 16th overall. It was stunning stuff.
In the final heat, the pair went even faster, reaching speeds of over 82mph to move up a notch to finish 15th overall.
The event was won by reigning gold medallist Laura Nolte and her brakewoman Deborah Levi from Germany.
Adele is a relative newcomer to the sport, having only taken up piloting three years ago, and at 29 years of age she must surely be given the chance to enjoy four more years on the Team GB Winter Olympic programme to push for glory in the French Alps 2030.
So, it may be over in Italy for now, but Adele will be turning to her next goal of Commonwealth Games qualification for the shot put this summer.
