A Welshpool charity that is providing support to scores of vulnerable and elderly people in the area has issued an appeal for more volunteers to meet demand.
Welshpool Community Haven has adopted the Meals on Wheels service from the Town Council, and is providing over 150 hot meals every single week.
The service is a vital lifeline for many, helping individuals remain independent in their own homes while reducing isolation and supporting wellbeing - an approach that aligns with wider efforts to strengthen community support and reduce pressure on services.
However, demand is now outstripping capacity.
Welshpool Community Haven has identified a growing need in outlying areas such as Montgomery and Meifod, but expansion is currently limited by a shortage of volunteer drivers. The charity is now making a direct appeal to the local community.
“We are incredibly proud to be delivering over 150 meals a week, but we know there are many more people who need this support. To reach them, we urgently need more volunteer drivers,” said Laura Hares, from the Welshpool Community Haven.
“Even a small amount of time can help us reach someone who may otherwise go without a hot meal or vital human contact. It’s not just about food – it’s about connection, dignity and community.”
Volunteers are especially needed who can use their own vehicles, with mileage costs covered and full training and support provided.
Whether someone can spare a couple of hours twice a week, or just once a fortnight, Laura said that every contribution will make a real difference.
Meanwhile, Welshpool Community Haven is entering an exciting new phase, with significant developments underway to expand its services and strengthen its role as a community hub for the town and surrounding areas.
The charity, which supports elderly, disabled and vulnerable residents and their carers, is now opening up its building - The Ann Holloway Centre - to offer rooms and spaces for hire to local groups, charities, professionals and community services. This will create more opportunities for organisations to deliver support locally, while also helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Haven.
Alongside this, plans are being developed to upgrade and improve several rooms within the centre, creating more accessible, welcoming and flexible spaces for community use. Having already upgraded an accessible hair dressing room with spaces for hire and a counselling room space there are plans afoot for far more upgrades, including upgrading digital provisions and spaces.
Welshpool Community Haven continues to grow as a place where people can come together, access support, and build stronger community connections - reflecting its wider mission to reduce isolation and improve wellbeing across Powys .
The charity also has a plea for anyone with unused digital devices sitting at home, whether they have upgraded or simply do not use, they are looking for iPads, tablets, laptops etc so they can support clients with paperwork, digital support and activities in upskilling.
