It has been revealed why it is taking so long to sort out Welshpool’s traffic lights on The Cross.
Temporary lights were put in place after the mains electrical box exploded outside The Royal Oak Hotel in January. It caused an underground fire that put the lights out of action.
Scottish Power engineers made the area safe at the time (pictured), but there has been a lack of any action since with the four-way traffic lights were put in place.
But this morning, the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency has provided us with an update after three months of inaction.
“The temporary traffic lights are on site due to an explosion underground in January,” they told us. “The explosion damaged the permanent traffic lights and the parts have been ordered. We are still awaiting the parts. Once the contractor receives them, the works will be undertaken and the permanent lights reinstated.”
The temporary lights have presented motorists with an awkward pinch point from the Church Street direction due to them being positioned on the road and not allowing for two cars to pass at once.
There was also concern raised with us by one wheelchair user about the temporary ramps installed on the opposite junction across the road from the Wellington, but these have already been removed.
