Welshpool to ‘open its doors’ this weekend
Powis Castle & Garden, Powis Estates, Welshpool Town Council, Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway and Y Lanfa Library and Museum have teamed up as Visit Welshpool to offer residents and visitors the opportunity to discover some of the town’s most historic buildings, attractions and stories.
A free Open Doors Welshpool guide will be available from all participating venues and the Welshpool Information Centre, helping visitors plan their weekend and make the most of everything taking place.
To make exploring the town even easier, parking at Church Street Car Park (SY21 7DD) will be completely free on both Saturday and Sunday.
Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway will be exploring the fascinating history of the line throughout the weekend.
Talks on the history of the railway and its engines will take place in the Display Shed at Welshpool Raven Square Station at 11am and 2pm on both days.
There will also be guide-led walking tours exploring the route of the old town section of the railway through Welshpool at 11.30am and 2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors taking part should meet at Raven Square Station no later than 10 minutes before the tour begins.
Rail tickets will be available at a 50% discount from Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway during the weekend.
Powis Castle & Garden will be offering free admission on Saturday and Sunday, providing a fantastic opportunity to explore one of the area’s best-known historic attractions.
The garden will be open from 10am until 5pm, while the Clive Museum will be open from 11am until 3.30pm, with the last admission at 3pm.
Welshpool’s historic Grade II listed Town Hall will open its doors from 9.30am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors will have the chance to explore parts of this landmark building which they may not normally see, including the Assembly Chamber, historic Court Room and cells, Council Chamber and Judges’ Retiring Room. Admission to the Town Hall for Open Doors is free, and no booking is required.
Visitors will also be able to see The Longest Yarn exhibition, which is being hosted at the Town Hall during the weekend. The exhibition is separate from the Open Doors programme and its normal admission charge (£5) applies.
Y Lanfa Library and Museum will also welcome visitors throughout the weekend, opening from 9.30am until 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.
The museum provides an opportunity to discover more about Welshpool and the surrounding area's history, its people and its communities.
Open Doors is part of the annual celebration of Wales' architectural and cultural heritage, giving people the opportunity to discover historic buildings and places across the country.
With several of Welshpool's leading heritage attractions taking part, free parking and a programme stretching across the town, visitors are encouraged to make a day - or a weekend - of exploring Welshpool.
