One-way system delay

04/08/2010 @ 04:05

Work on Welshpool’s new one-way system did not commence this week, despite hopes it would begin on Monday.

The work is part of the Tesco development taking place on the old Smithfield site, with town planners insisting the one-way system is up and working before the store is opened.

The supermarket giant agreed initially to undertake the work but the responsibility has now been handed to site developers Long Cross Group.

“It’s a slight delay but we hope it will kick-start in the coming days,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson.

Tesco hopes to open its new superstore in time for the Christmas rush, with the one-way system expected to be in operation up to a month prior to opening.

When the one-way system went to public consultation, 85% of townsfolk supported it but some expressed concern on the impact it could have on local business.
