Video of 1963 Welshpool emerges

Colour footage of 1963 Welshpool has appeared online to give residents an enchanting 90-second look at life in the town 54 years ago.

The video is in glorious condition and clearly shows one of the early runs of the Llanfair Railway after it reopened that year.

The train runs from the Raven Roundabout and down the backroad on its original track towards the Old Smithfield. It is then pictured making its return journey passed ‘Ballards’ and back towards the Raven.

The film was found in the BFI archives by reader Neil Bayliss who shared it on his Facebook page.

The caption with the film states: “In this film by William Arthur 'Cam' Camwell, we see one of the original W&L locomotives with a train of volunteers as they cross the level crossing and take a winding trip into the town section.”

It certainly provides us with a wonderful window into yesteryear.
