The end for Welshpool Youth Club?

05/12/2017 @ 06:32

Several Youth Clubs in Powys are set to close, and that includes the one at the old Swimming Baths building in Welshpool which has been running for decades.

Under measures to save £550,000 a year, Powys County Council is set to sell off its buildings that house the youth clubs but has said it will look at alternative opportunities to work with youth in the towns affected.

The council said it has already saved £330,000 and this new plan is expected to save the remaining £220,000 in the next financial year.

“The saving will be achieved through relinquishing ownership and management costs of buildings, the service will negotiate access to venues when needed,” said a county council spokesperson.

“Work on alternative venues are already taking place with schools and housing services. The changes will allow us to continue direct work with secondary schools, and partnership work with the Urdd and YFC.

“One of the advantages of the option is it maintains a qualified and skilled workforce - a requirement of youth and national occupational standards.”

According to web site, Powys County Council currently oversee five youth clubs in Welshpool, Newtown, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Ystradgynlais.

Welshpool’s club nights are listed as Monday and Wednesday from 6.30pm-9pm. There is no indication as to when the final nights will be held nor when the building will be put up for sale.

Only last year we reported that Welshpool Youth Club was safe despite the expected cuts in the pipeline. That story is here: http://www.mywelshpool.co.uk/viewernews/ArticleId/11222
