A round-up of the prices from Monday's trading at Welshpool Livestock Sales


OTMS (22)

A smaller show of otm cattle this week selling to a top of £1067.26 (146ppkg) for a Limousin otm weighing 731kg from H & S Watkins, Cammen Uchaf. Heifers under 48 months topped at £991.20 (168ppkg) for a 590kg Limousin from E Gething & Co, Tycoch.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x15) 121.46ppkg / £819.14.

Cows 48-72 months (x1) 130ppkg / £893.10.

Heifers Under 48 months (x3) 159.21ppkg / £877.25.

Bulls Under 72 months (x3) 133.24ppkg / £1058.37.

Overall Average 127.95ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (3684)

An entry of  3684 prime hogget’s sold to an improved overall average of 195.13ppkg.

Lights (521) to 218ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 209ppkg from DO & VM Gethin, Pencoed. Average of 165.04ppkg.

Standards (1228) to 261ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Others to 239ppkg from J A Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. Average of 192.62ppkg.

Mediums (1217) to 256ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Others to 240ppkg from  R A Davies, Llwynderw. Average of 206.26ppkg

Heavies (417) to 236ppkg  from G Davies, Lan Farm. Others to 225ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Average of 199.29ppkg   

Over Weights (187) to 191ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Others to 190ppkg from R Richards & Co, Maenllengen. Average of 177.33ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2333)

An entry of 2227 cull ewes sold to a solid trade on all types of ewes. An average of £51.41 was achieved seeing a top of £111 from TE & TR Jerman, Cloddia Farm.  EE Powell & Son, Cil Pentre sold a ewe for £110 as well as G Davies, Lan Farm, sold ewes to £110. An entry of 86 cull rams forward sold to an average of £66.98, which topped at £126 G Davies, Lan Farm.

STORE LAMBS

A good entry of 904 store lambs selling to an overall average of £51.44. top price of the day went to RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw, for Suffolk x tup lambs making £76. Mixed and clean lambs reached £69 from E Gethin & Co, Tycoch, with texel x lambs. PA  Lloyd & TS Wierzbinski, Cartref, sold theave lambs for £67 for texel x lambs. Wether lambs topped at £63.50 from DW Davies, Peniarth.

Averages for the day were:

Mixed/Clean Lambs (368): £52.80

Theave Lambs (231): £52.90

Tup lambs (294): £48.99

Wether Lambs (7): £58.14

IN-LAMB EWES

Another small entry of 120 in-lamb ewes again sold to a very selective crowd with purchasers incredibly wary of the current weather conditions and the additional work the sheep bring. Entries forming part of a reduction sale from J W Kinsey, Honey Meadow, saw 8 Texel x 3 year old ewe, 4 carrying twins, 4 carrying singles sold for £92 with 12 2 year old Texel ewes 2 carrying twins and 10 carrying singles sold to £80. As found mules and texels from P A Lloyd, Cartref, carrying triplets sold to £64.

Catalogued sale of in-lamb ewes and couples is next Monday (Monday 5th February) – sale to commence 11.30 am following the sale of store lambs.
