Laura’s Walk raised £2,500

It was an inspiring story that captured the imagination of the town last month, and it has helped to raise an incredible £2,500 for charity.

Laura Wilkin, from Welshpool, was left in a wheelchair following a stroke but she took the first tentative steps towards getting back on her feet again late last year when she enrolled in a specialist programme at the Flash, run by Lorraine Lloyd (pictured on left with Laura).

After impressing the experienced fitness trainer with her determination, Lorraine set Laura an ambitious target of walking 20kms during the month of January.

And dozens of well-wishers turned up to the Flash to watch the 37-year-old complete her final metres and having added up all the money donated, Laura will be able to hand over £2,500 to The Lingen Davies Unit in Shrewsbury Hospital, where Laura received both radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and The Neurological Unit in Stoke where she had surgery on her brain tumour.

“Thank you to everybody who has supported Laura and myself,” said Lorraine.

“This has been a tremendous community effort supporting a young lady in her journey back to improved health along with raising a fantastic amount of money for the two centres who provided her treatment.”

According to Lorraine, Laura’s future is looking brighter, saying all her hard work and support in the gym has given her a more positive outlook for the way forward.

“Not only is she stronger physically and able to handle everyday tasks she is stronger mentally,” said Lorraine. “Doing this challenge has highlighted to Laura that she has got lots of friends both old and new that care. People who look at her as the wonderful caring brave young lady that she is and not just somebody being pushed around in a wheelchair.

“This has been so rewarding in so many ways for not just Laura but for all the participants on The National Exercise Scheme at The Flash Leisure Centre and all the people who have made themselves part of Laura’s recovery, it has been a very enlightening experience. Proving that with a little effort and support anything is possible.”
