MP ‘outraged’ by racist Facebook Group link

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies said he was “outraged” to find out that he was a member of a Facebook Group promoting Islamophobia.

Mr. Davies was said to be one of 10 Tory MPs, including leadership favourite Jacob Rees-Mogg, who were members of the 2,700-strong Conservative Debating Forum Monday Club which has been exposed as publishing Islamophobic, homophobic and racist abuse.

The story was exposed by the political site, Red Roar, and picked up by The Observer who contacted Mr. Davies for comment.

The MP told us last night that “I had no idea I had been added to this group and removed my name as soon as I knew”.

Regular social media user Mr. Davies, who describes Twitter as a “cesspit of vileness”, added: “I was outraged to find myself signed up to an unpleasant Facebook ‘group’ without my knowledge over the weekend.

“I’m grateful to The Observer for letting me know. I had no idea I could be added to internet based groups without my consent, or knowledge even.”

He has also described the Group as “unsavoury” and will seek advice to ensure he has not been drawn into similar groups without his knowledge.

According to Red Roar, the Group posts several times a day regarding Muslims or Islam, accompanied by comments such as “send them back” and “we should ban Islam”.

Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott and London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, have both been targets of abuse on the site.

Red Roar pointed out that there is no suggestion that any of those 10 MPs listed have posted inappropriate material or condone any of the views expressed in the Conservative Debating Forum group, and that several, including Mr. Davies, informed The Observer that they had no knowledge of being signed up and have since left the group after being alerted to its content.
