Today’s the day!

What a night ahead for Welshpool! Not only will the Christmas Lights be switched on, but we’ll all get to watch the first public play of The Fire Tones’ single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’.

The town has been chosen to officially launch the charity bid for Christmas No. 1 after the idea was conceived in The Pheasant last December by Welshpool firefighter, Chris Birdsell-Jones.

The excellent video was posted onto You Tube yesterday and in less than 24 hours it has passed 30,000 views.

The response has been astonishing with celebrities, including Band Aid co-creator Midge Ure, praising the track’s quality to set the scene for tonight’s official launch when the town is invited to come and sing along! Several of the local 'stars' from the video, including Chris, will be present.

The video will be shown on two screens at 7.20pm, but prior to that, the Town Council-organised evening will begin with a parade from the Tourist Information Centre towards the Town Hall where Carnival Queen Paige Challinor will flick the switch at about 7pm.

She will be joined in the parade by the Mayor, Santa and his sleigh, Newtown Youth Band, real reindeer and more.

The Town Hall will also light up to a musical show to warm us up for the big premiere, with a number of local firefighters selling the CD with all proceeds going to the Band Aid Trust and The Firefighters Charity.

There will also be a chance to meet Father Christmas in his grotto which will be situated at the back of the Town Hall. Refreshments will be available in the Town Hall Cafe as well as hot food on the street.

The Winter Festival will continue celebrations into Saturday with activity from 10am-4pm throughout the town including street market stalls as well as both craft and charity stalls within the Town Hall.

There will be entertainment throughout the day on the Town Hall stage along with festive buskers around the town. Hot food will be available on the street, and there will be the ever popular Petting Zoo located in Cumberland Place from 10am to 3pm.
