BBC Radio 2: Do they know it’s happening?

15/12/2018 @ 10:58

As The Fire Tones charity version of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ continues to go down a storm across the UK, MyWelshpool is asking Britain’s top radio station ‘do they know it’s even been released?’

The single has this weekend reached the lofty ranks of No. 4 in the physical sales and No. 6 in the downloads, but BBC Radio 2 has for some reason ignored the single, even repeatedly playing the original version from Band Aid recorded over 30 years ago.

We’ve dropped them a line for comment, but in the meantime the band, consisting of more than 40 firefighters from across the UK, have continued their incredible push for sales unabated.

“We are number 4 in the official singles chart for sales and number 6 for downloads,” the group posted on social media Saturday. “This is incredible and we are moving up. We haven’t charted in the official TOP 40 because of the streaming sites (Spotify/Apple Music and Amazon etc.).

“So, please keep sharing and streaming the song. We don’t have the millions and machine behind us like the superstars do, but we have YOU!

“Thank you all so much for your support so far. Let’s keep pushing and hopefully we can achieve a Christmas miracle and raise lots of money for The Fire Fighters Charity and Band Aid Trust.”

The initiative started in a Welshpool pub last Christmas when local firefighter Chris Birdsell-Jones noticed the reaction when the song was played. He set about contacting fellow fire services to hunt for singing talent and the end product is a stunning reflection on the quality of performers working within the fire service.
