Will Beacon Ring finally spill its secrets?

One of our area’s most iconic beauty spots will be back in the spotlight this summer after archaeologists confirmed they will return to try and find out more about this mysterious chapter of our past, but they need your help.

The Beacon Ring (right) overlooks Welshpool from the Offa’s Dyke path on Long Mountain, providing stunning views through the Severn Valley, but its past as an Iron Age hillfort has captured the imagination of the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust.

The organisation spent several weeks on site last summer (pictured), digging in several locations to try and reveal more details about its history.

The findings, while limited, were revealed to packed house in the Town Hall earlier this year with the Trust hoping to secure funding to continue their work.

And they have now announced that they will be back thanks to funding from Cadw, and are appealing for help from local residents.

“You can help our experienced archaeologists put the long lost pieces of the past together,” said a spokesperson for the Trust.

The Beacon Ring excavation will take place from July 1-31 and if you would like to help, contact Penelope.foreman@cpat.org.uk. Full training and equipment will be provided with residents incited to offer a day, week, or the whole month, depending on their availability.
