A Llanfair Caereinion County Councillor will front a public meeting tonight (Thursday) aimed at raising awareness of drug gangs targeting Mid Wales.

Councillor Gareth Jones said the free community event at Llanfair Caereinion Leisure Centre aims to raise awareness of the County Lines gangs who have been identified in both Welshpool and Newtown.

The meeting is expected to last around an hour and will include information and a presentation from three speakers. Those attending will then get the chance to ask questions and raise any concerns in the presence of local police officers.

Representatives from Caereinion High School, Llanfair Caereinion Primary School, Llanfair Caereinion Town Council, Llanfair United Football Club, COBRA Rugby Club, Llanfair Caereinion Hockey Club and Llanfair Caereinion YFC will be present.

Cllr Jones said he was shocked to see obvious drug-use in the town on Carnival night. .“It knocked home for me on carnival night; I have never seen drugs so blatantly used.

“It’s worrying to see young people offering it to people and how easily available it is in small towns like Llanfair.

“This meeting is a wake-up call to get something done and to stamp it out of Llanfair.”

Cuckooing – where offenders move into the homes of vulnerable people - will also be on the agenda tonight. The meeting starts at 6-30pm.
