Schools closing as waters rise

24/02/2020 @ 09:21

Schools are feeling the full brunt of the wet weather by announcing they will be closed today.

Many roads in the area are impassable and with the waters set to continue to rise, several schools are already taking no chances and calling it a day early.

A Welshpool High School statement at 9am reads: “For pupils who have already arrived at school we will be asking the buses to return them home later this morning as the roads may close before 3.30pm. If you are still trying to get to school, please turn around and go home.”

Llanfair Caereinion's high school has also just announced it will close with buses returning early to ‘ferry’ kids home.

Parents are also reporting that Guilsfield Primary School has made the decision too, with others expected to follow suit. Parents are advised to contact their school for updates.

The heavy night of rain has added to the problems with pilot, Paul Midwinter, whose Brandy Cottage was flooded by the airport last week and is underwater again, sharing this picture with us of his property and Welshpool Airport taken this week.

The advice is to stay home and not to add to the problems of the overstretched emergency services.
