Shrewsbury is ready for revellers
England is opening its licensed premises with strict safety restrictions in place a week earlier than Wales which will follow on July 13.
And it has sparked fears that people from this side of the border will be heading east to add to the expected rush that the pubs will face on opening day.
Normally, Saturday trains are packed with revellers from Newtown and Welshpool areas heading to Shrewsbury for a day out, with the last train home a sight to be seen.
But with Covid-19 still circulating on both sides of the border, it is hoped that people will be cautious.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said they wouldn’t go into operation specifics for tomorrow, but West Mercia Police are believed to operating to New Year’s Eve levels for the day.
Superintendent Mo Lansdale, told us: “We are aware of concerns that members of the public may intend to travel from areas of Wales into Shropshire tomorrow when pubs and restaurants are due to reopen.
“We would like to reassure the community that we are working closely with our colleagues in Wales and the British Transport Police to address any issues, should they arise.
“We are prepared for the opening of pubs and other premises this weekend and have continued to assess demand and priorities appropriately. We hope that everyone enjoys their weekend but please remember that certain restrictions are still in place, and would ask people to behave responsibly and look after each other.”
