Local Covid wave subsides as cases drop

The local Covid-19 wave that threatened to hit Welshpool this week appears to have passed us by, with numbers released today showing the area is enjoying its lowest infection rates for some time.

Welshpool High School decided to close for a fortnight on Tuesday after it was revealed that cases were rising in areas feeding into the school, and teacher shortages due to isolating was another key factor.

There was also talk of an outbreak at Welshpool Hospital but Powys Teaching Health Board has not replied to our two requests this week for confirmation.

However, today’s figures showing the number of positive cases for the seven-day period from November 18-24 are far lower than what they were for the previous week, and the lowest for some time.

According to Public Health Wales, only four positive cases were detected in Welshpool, while the Four Crosses & Guilsfield area has dropped back to the 0-2 bracket. The figures are equally encouraging for the Llanfyllin & Llanwddyn and Montgomery, Trewern & Berriew areas. Llanfair Caereinion & Caersws, which has been in double figures for much of the past month, is also back down to the 0-2 bracket today.

Despite the encouraging news, the advice remains to take precautions as health officials say the virus is still circulating across all communities.
