Welshpool area maintains low Covid-19 rates

With First Minister Mark Drakeford set to review the ongoing Welsh lockdown restrictions this Friday, the Welshpool area will be hoping some regional consideration will come into play.

The latest figures released today by Public Health Wales continue to show a relatively small amount of positive Covid-19 tests across Montgomeryshire compared to large swathes of the rest of Wales.

It comes as Welshpool Medical Centre announced it will commence its vaccination programme for the 75-79 age cohort from next Monday.

MyWelshpool has been posting the daily figures through Facebook over the past fortnight, and these past three days have continued to prove Welshpool has been standing up well to the killer virus.

For the second day running there were no new cases in Welshpool, while the Guilsfield & Four Crosses area saw a rise of four, their biggest daily increase for some time.

But across the rest of the local areas categorised by Public Health Wales, there has hardly been a case with a total of just 11 reported over the past 24 hours.

Nevertheless, Wales remains in total lockdown and it is unlikely that restrictions will be eased for rural Mid Wales while parts of north and south Wales remain in the grip of Covid-19.

Dr Giri Shankar, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Public Health Wales, said today: “While there has been a reduction in the numbers of positive Coronavirus cases in several parts of Wales, this data needs to be verified over several days before we can be sure that it is showing an established downward trend.

“Despite this, the number of cases remains extremely high in Wales and is cause for serious concern, due to the impact on NHS Wales services and the prevalence of the new, more infectious variant.

“In order to avoid adding to the current severe pressure on hospitals, it is extremely important that everyone continues to remain vigilant, by staying at home and sticking to the rules.

“All of Wales remains in lockdown.”

Sadly, there have been 154 Powys residents that have died in connection with Covid-19, according to Office for National Statistics figures.
