‘Smash your face in’ threat to councillor
During a discussion at last night’s budget meeting to reduce the council’s waste disposal costs, Cllr Heather Sherlock said she had received verbal abuse more than once after spotting residents dumping household waste in public bins.
“I have seen people filling bins with household rubbish,” she said. “I have approached people and asked them what they are doing but told to mind my own business.
“On one occasion a person told me they would ‘smash my face in’.”
The town council is trying to reduce its overheads and the Services Committee will look at ways of trimming the waste bill.
But in the meantime, councillors voiced concern over Cllr Sherlock’s shocking revelation and said those dumping household waste in bins were breaking the law.
“It is fly tipping so it would be good to check if there is anything in there that identifies the person responsible,” said Cllr Alison Davies.
The responsibility for emptying Welshpool’s bins has largely been handed back to Powys County Council, but Town Clerk, Anne Wilson, said that employees are still responsible for some collections and do monitor any evidence if fly tipping occurs.
