No re-think over Welshpool HSBC closure

08/02/2021 @ 09:47

Despite an enormous backlash, banking giant HSBC will not be reversing its decision to close the Welshpool branch and will also be removing its ATM from the town and selling the building.

The disappointing news was broken by Montgomeryshire Member of the Senedd, Russell George, who met the bank’s local Director following outrage from local customers.

HSBC, once known as ‘The World’s Local Bank’, is closing scores of branches across the country to modernise its business, with Welshpool customers now expected to use the Post Office or travel to the Newtown branch to conduct banking transactions in person.

The September closure came as a shock with no pre-warning, and customers have still not been officially informed.

“I was disappointed HSBC had not contacted me before making the announcement,” said Mr George, MS.

“I did ask whether the decision to close this branch could be re-considered, but it was no surprise to me to be met with a firm ‘No’.

“I did enquire about what will happen to the staff at this branch, (and) was informed that all staff have been spoken to and other job opportunities have been offered to move to other branches.”

Mr George asked the bank to consider the difficulties many have with online banking and to also think of the area’s vulnerable customers, but, he said, the request did not make a difference.

“I was told HSBC will work closely with this group of people,” he said, whilst explaining the situation with the cash machine and the building’s future.

“The ATM in the wall of the HSBC building will be removed. Apparently there are nine ATMs in Welshpool. I have asked for confirmation of how many of those can be used free of charge.

“The building is owned by HSBC and I have asked for the bank to make contact with me and Welshpool Town Council to have discussions around what they plan to do with building.

“The local director confirmed with me that HSBC haven’t written to Welshpool branch customers yet, but will be doing so during the summer months and offer alternative solutions, such as the use of the Post Office.
