Welshpool firm builds training capacity

Training centres across the UK might well be closed during the national lockdown, but that hasn’t stopped a local company from training their staff.

SWG Group, based in Welshpool, transformed one of their own warehouses into a classroom so members of their team could still advance their skills.

Five members of staff at the family-run firm have completed a socially distanced course to become an approved fitter for Sika Roofing.

Jacqui Gough, Director at SWG Group, said they are doing everything they can to continue with the planned expansion and development of the company during lockdown.

She said: “Our staff may not be able to access training centres but this has not been a problem for us.

“We are utilising the space we have and were able to set up a separate work station for each of the people on the course, with a trainer coming in to complete the Covid-compliant training.

“Three of our existing staff are already trained in Sika Roofing so they are also able to share best practice.

“This will make a big difference to our customers as we will have a bigger task-force able to provide better quality flat roofs than felt ones and therefore can reduce the time a project takes to complete.”
The company now has eight staff trained in Sika Roofing, which it uses where appropriate in the social housing, education, health care, local authority and commercial contracts it completes across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

SWG Group is also beginning to complete projects in North Wales, Herefordshire, Cheshire and parts of the West Midlands.
