Nothing to M&Co rumours

In a week that saw Sainsbury’s announce it was leaving Welshpool, the town centre’s largest tenant said it is going nowhere.

Rumours started circulating in the wake of Monday’s decision by the supermarket giant that M&Co was also considering its Welshpool future.

But that’s not the case, according to the retail chain’s Scottish HQ from where a senior spokesperson told us: “These are rumours so nothing to comment on at this time.”

The retail chain announced last August that it will close 47 stores as part of a major post-lockdown shake-up, but Welshpool was spared.

On Monday, MyWelshpool broke the disappointing news that Sainsbury’s would be leaving the town, sparking widespread online discussion about what could happen to the huge site.

Among the options mooted were a call for Iceland to return, or a suitable location for Travelodge, who are interested in opening a hotel in the town.

There were also concerns raised by residents that the site could become another housing development, should no suitable alternative be found.
