Welshpool pays the highest Council Tax in Powys
Welshpool households will be paying the most Council Tax in Powys from April, it has been revealed.
Yesterday, Powys County Council agreed to raise their share of the Council Tax precept by 2.9%, but despite Welshpool Town Council not raising their precept this year, a Band D property will have to pay £1,622.93 from April, £41 more than Newtown (£1,581.81), almost £170 more than Llanfair Caereinion (£1,454.76), almost £120 more than Montgomery (£1,504.45) and almost £200 more than Guilsfield (£1,423.01).
According to information provided by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, elsewhere in the county, towns like Brecon (£1,536.42), Llandrindod Wells (£1,470.80), and Llanidloes (£1,503.60) will all pay less than Welshpool.
Only Machynlleth (£1,621.24) comes close to Welshpool as the town counts the cost of double-digit increases to the town council’s precept in recent years.
Yesterday’s increase means a Band D property will contribute £39.58 extra each year to the county council’s budget.
There had been considerable opposition to the rise, but it was eventually voted through by 39 to 31.
Following several years of sharp rises, Welshpool Town Council decided in January not to increase their share of the bill, but Dyfed-Powys Police have added 5.76%, or an extra £15, on a Band D.
In defence of their increase, portfolio holder for finance, Cllr Aled Davies, said that Powys is one of the few local authorities that has money advice officers to help people with their bills.
Cllr Davies said: “If you have people in your communities who have issues around payment, please ask them to get in touch with the money advice officers.
“We appreciate it’s a large sum of money that goes out of the bank every month, but it’s extremely important that our services are well maintained.
“I know we are increasing council tax, but the point must be made that it’s one of, if not the lowest in Wales.
“We have gone that extra mile to ensure that our Council Tax is kept as low as possible.”
