Tonight’s Monty Hour, the weekly series of online talks which have proved extremely popular through lockdown, will highlight our local link to Madagascar.
Miara Rabearisoa has lived in Wales for a decade with his family, and since 2019 he has lived in Montgomery. Tonight he will highlight the link between his two ‘home’ nations.
In 2018, Miara helped publish The History of Madagascar, written by David Griffiths, in three different languages - Welsh, English and Malagasy - by translating the latter version of the book.
The connection between Wales and Madagascar started when two young families from Mid-Wales sailed to Madagascar in 1818. Their extraordinary journey to Madagascar changed this nation profoundly despite challenges and tragedies.
Today, people in Madagascar admire these Welsh people and they are part of the history of of the country. Unfortunately, few people in Wales know about the link and the historical bonds between Wales and Madagascar.
