Taxi firm finds new base

The Welshpool taxi firm that was told to leave their premises to make way for the new town council offices have found a new base, which will allow them to operate as a late night office to provide safety for revellers heading home from a night out.

Wrights Taxi were given notice by the town council to vacate their offices next to the Tourist Information Centre which had become a safe place to wait for a lift home.

Earlier this week, Wrights accused the town council of putting people’s safety at risk with the closure, but the council explained that the firm had been given six months’ notice that they wanted to move there from their current Triangle House facility to cut costs.

A plea was made for a suitable town centre alternative and after some frantic removal work over the past 24 hours, the new office in Puzzle Square will be open this weekend.

“The new office, in the former Paint Shop, will be open and manned for the weekend, but with the restrictions there will be no sitting inside unfortunately until they are lifted,” the company told us.

Welshpool Town Council is looking at ways of reducing its annual budget and will vacate its current headquarters once the Tourist Information Centre has been refurbished to accommodate the office staff.
