Russell George comfortably retains Montgomeryshire seat
Mr George (pictured) saw his Conservative majority increase from 41.8% of the vote to 48.1% after polling 12,013 votes.
It was a winning majority of almost 8,000 votes from Plaid Cymru’s Elwyn Vaughan in second on 4,485 votes, with the Liberal Democrats coming in third on 4,207 votes and Labour fourth with 3,576.
Plaid and Labour have both increased their vote share since the 2016 election, but it was another woeful election for the local Lib Dems who saw their vote slide 11% in a seat they once held.
Mr George, said: “It’s an absolute privilege to be returned as the Montgomeryshire member of the Senedd to represent my home constituency, where I was born and lived all my life."
Plaid Cymru candidate Elwyn Vaughan, said: “This is the best ever result for Plaid Cymru in Montgomeryshire, we are the progressive force against the ultra right wing agenda by the Conservatives from London. That is the context unfortunately that we live in these days.
“I can assure you I will be staying in Powys politics to challenge and keep Russell and his team answerable and working hard for our communities.”
Mr Vaughan added that this result ensured that a Welsh voice had been heard clearly in the constituency which would be a base for the future.
Liberal Democrat candidate, Alison Alexander, said: “I can’t think of a time when liberal values could be more important. We have a lot of work to do here in Montgomeryshire and we are ready to do it.”
The turn-out has been recorded as 49.7%, up 1.2% on last time out, with 25,134 votes being cast.
