Despite hopes that the easing of Covid restrictions would ensure it goes ahead, Welshpool’s 1940s Weekend has been cancelled.
The September event had kickstarted fundraising activities recently, but with £18,000 needed, organisers fear that they were not left with enough time to make it happen.
“It is with a heavy heart we bring you this news that due to the on going restrictions hampering our fund raising towards staging the event and the new Covid Delta variant, we have decided to cancel our event for 2021,” said lead organisers Alan Crowe.
“It takes around £18,000 to stage the event and with only limited fund raising events allowed this was never achievable in the time available.
“Following the latest government announcement/advice, we felt a huge sense of responsibility to put first the health and wellbeing of the public and the volunteers who would have helped over the weekend.”
Planning is now underway for “an even better event” in 2022, but Mr Crowe said they will still go ahead with the a 1940s Dance/Blitz Ball on September 15 at the Town Hall, providing restrictions allow. Featuring the Ashby Little Big Band, ticket are available at £12 from www.jumblebee.co.uk/welshpoolblitzball.
