A rare glimpse inside stunning local garden

03/09/2021 @ 10:16

The gates are opening on Sunday for the public to capture a rare view of the gardens at a local country house.

Vaynor Park, in Berriew, will open its gardens to the National Garden Scheme for the first time since 1983, although visitors have been allowed in by the Corbett Winder family in recent years for other fundraising events.

The family has livd in the stunning estate since 1720, and it is now home to Kate Corbett Winder and her husband William who have generously agreed to open again for the National Garden Scheme.

Kate is both an artist and a gardener as is evident in the spectacular five-acre garden where south facing herbaceous borders are resplendent with early autumn colour from late flowering salvias, penstemons and dahlias; a box edged rose parterre, laid out in 1867 that now contains a mix of old varieties and new English roses; banks of blue hydrangeas flowering from August through the autumn and the inner courtyard planted with lime green paniculata and white Annabel hydrangeas.

The estate’s woodlands provide fantastic views across the Montgomeryshire countryside to enjoy.

The garden will be open from 12noon-5-m on Sunday and admission is £6 (Children free). Tickets, directions and more information about this and other Welsh gardens can be found at ngs.org.uk.

“This is the first year we are going with the NGS who share the proceeds with many well deserving charities - who have missed out so much on open garden proceeds during the lock downs,” said Kate.

The money raised will go to fund nursing and caring charities supported by the National Garden Scheme including Marie Curie, Macmillan, The Queen’s Nursing Institution and Hospice UK.
