A former headteacher with extensive experience in the schools sector has been appointed as the new permanent Director of Education for Powys County Council.
Lynette Lovell was appointed at a meeting of full council today having previously undertaken the role of interim Chief Education Officer at the Council, leading improvements in schools and education in the county following the Estyn inspection in 2019.
Her appointment was confirmed following an extensive interview process. This included a student voice panel, headteacher representatives, and Powys County Councillors.
Lynette has more than 34 years’ experience in education and schools. She started teaching in south Wales in 1987 before returning to Powys to teach at Hafren CP in Newtown.
In 2004, she was made Headteacher of that school and, subsequently, took on Acting Headteacher roles at other Powys schools before, in 2012, starting work as a School Improvement Officer with the council and then interim Chief Education Officer in 2019.
Chief Executive, Dr Caroline Turner, said: “I am delighted to confirm this appointment which will provide a permanent and robust management structure in place for the schools service in Powys.”
Commenting on her appointment, Lynette said: “It will be a privilege and honour for me to be the Director of Education for Powys, leading our children and young people into successful futures.”
The role will carry a salary of up to £95,000.
